There are currently three Cunard ships, Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria and a fourth ship, Queen Anne, will enter service in 2024. This investment is part of the company’s ambitious plans for the future of Cunard globally and will be the first time since 1999 that Cunard will have four ships in simultaneous service.
CUNARD GOES ELECTRIC: On 14 August 2023 Cunard achieved a ground-breaking milestone as the brand attains the capability for its entire fleet to connect to shore power where available when docked.
The successful plugging in of shore power capabilities on all three Cunard ships – Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria, and Queen Elizabeth – comes ahead of new ship Queen Anne launching in May 2024, which will depart on the maiden voyage with the technology already installed.
Shore power technology enables docked ships to connect directly to a specially fitted land-based source, allowing cruise ships to switch off their onboard engines and operate on electricity sourced entirely from the local electrical grid, reducing emissions and noise while at port. The ability for the ships to plug in to local grids already exists at many key ports, including Queen Anne’s homeport of Southampton. As part of the European Union’s Fit for 55 programme, all main ports in the European Union are scheduled to offer ships the ability to connect to shoreside electricity by 2030.
