Days 3 & 4

Copenhagen, Denmark

Despite being home to around 1.3 million people, Copenhagen goes by the nickname byen – meaning ‘the village’. Part of the magic of Denmark and its capital are the contradictions. Copenhagen is where classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales and the famous Little Mermaid statue meet a vibrant art scene and trendsetting fashion. You’ll find tiny, traditional bodegas (pubs where smoking is still allowed), next to new, polished juice bars selling matcha lattes. And for all their sleek and minimalist Nordic design, Danes certainly know how to get cosy – or ‘hygge’ themselves, as they say.

Discover the beauty of the Copenhagen cruises while visiting the delightful Tivoli Gardens, where you can soar above the city in a hot air balloon suspended from a Ferris Wheel. Since it opened in 1843, the park has served as inspiration for the likes of Hans Christian Andersen and Walt Disney, and has been a haven for locals and visitors alike who flock to it for a magical escape. It’s captivating around the clock, but perhaps never more so than at night, when twinkling lights add to the charm. Stroll down leafy byways as dusk falls and hundreds of lights twinkle through the trees or in the shops and cafés of Stroget, Europe's longest pedestrianised shopping street.

Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen was the adopted home of Hans Christian Andersen - commemorated in the waterfront sculpture of his Little Mermaid. And, true to the spirit of its most famous resident, Copenhagen embodies a Nordic fairytale magic all of its own.

With a variety of destinations to explore, cruises to Copenhagen have plenty to offer. Enjoy another stroll along the Nyhavn Canal, browsing the market stalls and looking at the fine old sailing ships moored near its banks. You will find more history at the magnificent Christiansborg Palace, the National Museum - home to fascinating Viking relics - and at Kronberg Castle - the former Elsinore of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'.

Days 5 & 6

Oslo, Norway

Oslo, founded in 1050 and Norway's capital since the end of the 11th century, now a modern city with an eclectic mix of ancient castles, frescoed 18th century houses, vast parks and glittering lakes, is a delight. Nestled between rolling green hills and tranquil fjords, the Norwegian capital is a compact city that’s perfect for exploring on foot or on two wheels. Named European Green Capital for 2019, it’s renowned for its green spaces, including Frogner Park, which contains the world’s largest sculpture park by a single artist, with more than 200 works by Gustav Vigeland. Marvel at the city’s modern architecture in the shape of the sculptural glass Opera House and the striking Barcode, 12 individually designed buildings of different heights and widths. For the best views in the city, climb to the roof of the Opera House, or the observation deck at the top of Holmenkollen ski jump.

Oslo cruise must-sees include the Viking House Museum with its display of 9th century longboats, the Munch-museet, which houses works by Edvard Munch, and the medieval Akershus Castle - a warren of secret passages, crypts, dungeons and magnificent halls. Cruises to Oslo will also give you the opportunity to enjoy the traditional Norwegian cuisine. Near the castle, in Aker Brygge, you will find some of Norway's best restaurants serving classic dishes like fiskesuppe (fish soup), fenalar (cured leg of mutton) and multer med krem (cloudberries with cream). With such a variety of activities available for Oslo cruises make some time too for a stroll through verdant Frogner Park, home to more than 190 masterpieces by the famous sculptor Gustav Vigeland.

Day 7

Days 8 & 9

Rotterdam (Tours to Amsterdam)

The city of Rotterdam is located on the banks of the North Sea by the Nieuwe Waterweg and is different to other Dutch destinations. Recognised as one of the world's leading ports, this ever-evolving city has a wealth of attractions. With its modern skyline, industrial port and hardworking heritage, the Netherlands’ second city has always been outshone by its pretty sibling Amsterdam, the quaint capital. Rotterdam offers something for everyone - those who love the hustle and bustle of city life and those searching for peace tranquillity. One of Rotterdam's main attractions is Diergaarde Blijdorp, a zoo featuring the impressive Oceanium where visitors can walk through an underwater tunnel surrounded by sharks. Rotterdam also attracts a great deal of international interest as a city of architecture. Across a few square miles in the city centre, you can find a complete overview of 20th century developments in modern architecture, from the pre-war Van Nelle Factory, designed around the concepts of light, air and space, to the striking Kubuswoning, or Cube Houses, a signature creation of Dutch architect Piet Blom. For an oasis of peace in the middle of the hectic city, be certain to visit the lovely gardens of Arboretum Trompenburg.
