About the villa
This beautifully restored stone cottage nestles in a gorgeous setting only a ten minute drive from amenities and great beaches. Characterful, open plan living, a lovely garden with both sunny and shady spots and a pool in full view of the terrace make this a super choice for a couple or family with children.
Snow-capped into springtime, the White Mountains of Crete are a scenic delight and this charming property is superbly positioned in the foothills just above the sleepy little village of Patelari. Carpeted by olive and orange groves, the fertile valley below the house is an impressively soothing sight with birds of prey often seen soaring on the heat thermals rising from the valley floor.
Accessed from the spacious, air-conditioned double bedroom, the large first floor balcony is the ideal spot from which to admire the valley view and will be equally enticing to anyone seeking a little ‘me time’ to soak up the sun, read, snooze or simply enjoy a glass of something refreshing!
Home to a remarkable olive tree believed to be at least 800 years old, the well-screened garden has a lawn and a built-in barbecue plus dining and sun terraces of the same warm honey-coloured stone as the cottage itself. Various naturally shady spots offer respite from the midday sun while three large hammocks strung invitingly between two olive trees will certainly encourage languorous afternoons. A further covered dining terrace is handily accessed via patio doors directly from the kitchen.
Offering all the facilities and comfort of a ‘home away from home’, the interior of Carob Tree Cottage is cosy, inviting and full of charm thanks to creative use of both natural wood and stone textures throughout. Spacious and tastefully furnished, the open plan ground floor is sociable and immensely practical. Two comfortable bedrooms, one leading off the other, together with a beautifully fitted bathroom can be found on the first floor with a convenient cloakroom on the ground floor.
Dine under the plane trees at the nearest taverna, Drakiana which is about a ten minute drive, as is the coastal town of Platanias where there are further tavernas, a bakery, supermarket and other amenities. The beaches at Platanias and Gerani are backed by informal bars with open-air terraces or, a little further afield, the blue flag beaches of Falassarna (a 45 minute drive) and the spectacular pink sand island of Elafonissi (90 minutes by car) make lovely destinations for a day trip.
A wealth of sporting activities are available in the immediate area, including boat tours and mountain biking as well as various water sports such as water-skiing, kayaking, sailing and scuba diving. There are also plenty of opportunities for walkers, including the famous Samaria Gorge (32km) or the quieter Agia Irini Gorge (36km).
Nearby Agia has a wildlife lake with a café while the Botanical Park and Gardens of Crete (with a popular restaurant) are a 25 minute drive. Youngsters in particular will enjoy a day at the Limnoupoli water park, just 15 minutes away by car, whilst the bustling harbour town of Chania (20km) offers great sightseeing, shopping and myriad eating options.
