Day 1 (Embark)

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Just 130 miles from Africa, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was founded in 1494, becoming a key port on the trade route between Europe and the Americas. Framed by Baroque churches and historic buildings, charming plazas dot the city, including the central Plaza de España. In contrast, the modern Torres de Santa Cruz are the tallest twin towers in Spain, and the futuristic Auditorio de Tenerife sits majestically on the waterfront. Calle de la Noria bustles with Canarian style and offers shopping, entertainment and cuisine. Outside of town, the rugged laurel forest of Anaga Rural Park has marked hiking trails, while the UNESCO World Heritage site of Teide National Park displays the island’s volcanic origins and the highest summit in Spain. Another UNESCO World Heritage site, the town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is home to many of Tenerife’s oldest buildings. The island also has spectacular beaches and is famous for mild weather.

Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

Known as the ‘Pearl of the Atlantic’, the volcanic island of Madeira is bursting with exotic colors. The capital city of Funchal is a place to lose yourself in old alleyways, street cafés and pretty squares. See Gothic and Romanesque styles blend at Funchal Cathedral; explore the Contemporary Art Museum, which is housed in the mighty 17th century São Tiago Fortress; or join the locals in the Mercado dos Lavradores, which is adorned with beautiful hand-painted tiles. In the evening, check out the funky Zona Velha. You’ll find the coolest bars, galleries, restaurants and stores in this hip enclave of the city, so pull up a chair on the Rua de Santa Maria, order yourself a glass of Madeira wine, and watch the world go by.

The dark, barren hills and vast craters of the island’s spectacular volcanic terrain can be explored by bus or 4x4, on foot or by camel, and nearby Timanfaya National Park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The island is also renowned for its stellar beaches. Manmade attractions include Castillo de San Gabriel, on a tiny islet facing town, and Castillo de San Jose, home to the contemporary art museum. Arrecife surrounds a natural lagoon known as Charco de San Ginés, lined with charming cottages and the pretty Church of San Ginés. A few miles north of Arrecife is the home of artist César Manrique, the island’s favorite son. Manrique left a lasting impact on the aesthetics of Lanzarote, from the absence of high-rise hotels to the trademark whitewashed houses with green or blue woodwork.

Las Palmas, the capital city of Gran Canaria island, is a bustling city that weaves the vibe of the Spanish mainland into a unique tapestry of life informed by world cultures including African, Chinese and Indian. A city of superlatives, it's one of Europe's biggest ports with one of the world's best climates and the cleanest air of any Spanish city according to a WHO study. Many also believe that the long, wide stretch of Las Canteras is one of the world's great urban beaches. The elegant façades, pedestrian lanes, fashionable boutiques, cafés and restaurants of the Triana neighborhood make it one of Spain's top outdoor shopping districts. The streets and squares of the nearby Old Town, known as Vegueta, are lined with historical buildings and museums such as the Casa de Colón mansion, Catedral de Santa Ana, Museo Canario and the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno.
